A Biddulph chip shop has been granted permission to extend its opening hours following an application that sparked debate amongst local residents.

Grange Fish Bar on Congleton Road received permission to open for longer after applying to Staffordshire Moorlands District Council.

Previously the premises had to close between 2.30pm and 4.30pm on Monday to Saturday.

However, it can now remain open between these hours meaning it can open all the way through from 11.30am - 9.30pm on Monday to Saturday.

It will remain closed on Sundays. It can open on Bank Holidays except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.

The application has been somewhat controversial among nearby residents with the plans receiving five letters of objection, however, ten letters of support were also received.

Those who objected raised concerns about issues such as parking, the smell, and noise.

However, those who submitted letters of support said they enjoyed the food and would like the chippy to open longer. They also said they wanted to support local businesses.

Permission was granted following a report by the district council's planning officers.

It concluded: "The main issues for residents relate to odours, traffic and illumination and that these impacts would be present for longer periods, especially later into the evenings and on Sundays and Bank Holidays when currently the premises are not able to open.

"The residents raising objection obviously also do not consider that the current controls are sufficiently effective or adequate. However, these were deemed to be acceptable by the local planning authority when the existing permission was granted in 2011.

"Now that this current application has been amended to not extend evening opening and to not introduce Sunday opening it can be judged on balance acceptable."
