Biddulph's very own Port Vale star James Wilson was a standout performer as the local team were promoted to League One in a 3-0 victory over Mansfield Town at the weekend.

Wilson, who grew up in Biddulph and was a student at Biddulph High School, nodded in a header to score the second of Vale's three goals in the 24th minute to put the side firmly ahead in their first match at Wembley in 29 years.

The former Manchester United striker's performance was so good that he was named man of the match following the win.

He also had a hand in Vale's first goal, starting off the attack with a neat through-ball to Mal Benning.

It was also a foul on Wilson that led to Oliver Hawkins receiving a second yellow card in the 35th minute, leaving Mansfield with 10 men for the majority of the game.

He then came close to scoring a second with a free kick in the final seconds of the first half, but his dipping effort whistled just wide of the post.

Biddulph High School have since congratulated their former student on his performance, with a spokesperson saying: "Congratulations to former pupil James Wilson on his exceptional performance in the play offs at Wembley. We are so proud of your achievements."

Wilson has represented a range of clubs over his career, including Manchester United, Salford, Aberdeen, Brighton & Hove Albion, Derby County and Sheffield United.

He has also played for England at a range of youth levels, including the under-16s, under-19s and under-21s.
