Moorlands police officers have warned residents of a recent trend of local residents being called by scammers attempting to make appointments for property upgrades.

Officers say the callers often target elderly residents, and if an appointment is booked two males arrive at a resident's house and attempt to take a deposit for the work.

However, the pair are unable to provide any identification when asked.

Police have now asked residents to ensure they are able to verify someone's identity before they allow them into their property.

Anyone who suspects they might have been targeted by scammers is also asked to contact the police.

PCSO Ashley Goodwin, of Staffordshire Police's Moorlands team, said: "Residents, please be aware of scam callers.

"We have received reports of elderly residents being called on their home telephone numbers and appointments being made for property upgrades.

"Two males have attended these appointments and have asked for deposits for work to be completed.

"No ID has been produced and no calling cards or evidence of contact has been provided.

"Please ensure that you check ID before allowing anybody into your property.

"If you are unsure, deny access whilst you call the company to verify identity, any legitimate caller will not mind you doing this.

"If you suspect a scam please contact Staffordshire police to report."
