Today marks the anniversary of the first lockdown and the nation will be remembering the tragic loss of life and standing with those millions who are grieving.
Tuesday, 23rd March, has been chosen as a National Day of Reflection by charity Marie Curie, who is asking people to 'take a minute to reflect and a moment to connect by joining in with a minute's silence at noon, shining a light at 8pm or reflecting on the last year in their own way.
Marie Curie is also encouraging the public to buy colourful flowers to place in their windows or to send to someone who is grieving.
It is hoped this day will allow people to pause and think about the pandemic, the unprecedented losses and to show their support for each other.
"At 8pm we'll hold a minute's silence and come together to light up the night," said the charity.
"Stand outside with a light – a candle, a torch, even your phone - to remember someone who's died and show your support to people going through a bereavement.
"There are still tough times ahead, as the death toll continues to rise.
"This annual day will give us all time to pause and think about this unprecedented loss we're facing, and support each other through grief in the years to come."
Biddulph Town Council is also encouraging people to join in remembering.
A spokesperson said: "Since the first lockdown began in 2020, hundreds of thousands of people have died. Too many lives have been cut short and millions have been bereaved.
"Behind the statistics and whatever the cause, every death has been devastating for the people left behind. Many have been unable to properly say goodbye to their loved ones, comfort or even hug each other.
"As a nation, we need to acknowledge the millions in silent pain. So join us tomorrow on 23 March, the first anniversary of the first UK lockdown, for a National Day of Reflection.
"Let's come together to reflect on our collective loss, support those who've been bereaved, and hope for a brighter future.
"There are still tough times ahead, as the death toll continues to rise. So whatever your background, whatever your beliefs, and whatever you've been through, please join us for our first National Day of Reflection.
"This annual day will give us all time to pause and think about this unprecedented loss we're facing, and support each other through grief in the years to come."
