Decision to move wheel from Biddulph Town Hall: You have your say

The people of Biddulph have had their say on the decision to move the wheel away from Biddulph Town Hall to be incorporated into a new memorial to Biddulph's miners on Station Road.
The decision was taken at a meeting of Biddulph Town Council held on 27th July, as part of the council's plans to develop the land near Sainsbury's into a community garden and a miners' memorial.
However, Biddulph's residents have been largely against the decision, with Biddulph Nub News reporting last week how hundreds of comments in opposition to the decision were made on social media.
Biddulph's Mayor, Cllr Sylvia Rushton, also told Nub News that she was against the decision, as were the family of former Biddulph Mayor George Humphries, who stated that Cllr Humphries would be "turning in his grave" after working to get the wheel originally put in place in front of the town hall in the 1980s.
Now that you have had a few days to make your voices heard, we have put together a compilation of your comments below as a way of gauging the overall thoughts of the people of Biddulph on the matter. Here's what you had to say:
- "Biddulph has mining history through the centuries. During the last century people moved into the area for colliery work. Mining is embedded in Biddulph's history. The wheel should remain at its current site as a representation of the contribution which mining has made to the character of Biddulph." - "It should be left where it is not put where people can't see it to appreciate it. A lot of people moved to Biddulph to work down the mines." - "The wheel should remain in its current place, it was put there as a symbol of the mining history of the town and is always beautifully complimented with flowers." - "It belongs in the centre of town where it is for all to see and remember the town's heritage." - "My dad worked 51 years down the pit, and that wheel or one like it took the miners safely down and brought them back up, so whoever has suggested moving it, think again and have some respect for all the men who risked their lives every day." - "Biddulph has a miners estate which I grew up on and my dad was a miner as were many more from Biddulph, this needs to stay to where it is." - "Please let it stay, my grandad worked in the Biddulph mine when it was a manual pick and a tin bath when got home, it's the Biddulph heritage and we should be proud of it, with so many families having family members who have worked down the mines." - "It should stay where it is, so everyone can see it. Not put out of the way." - "Big mistake to move it." - "I'm a local councillor and I voted against moving it. The sentiment of a mining memorial is excellent - the moving of the wheel is not." - "George Humphries was my grandad who had the wheel put there. Imagine how we feel. My grandad would be turning in his grave." - "It is not just a wheel. It's a physical reminder of how our town was built on the backs of those who worked down the mines and related industries." - "I wonder who is going to go down there to sit on those benches. I know I won't. The wheel is part of our history. It should stay where it is, in the town centre." - "I feel to move it is so disrespectful. It's like it's being hidden away. If they want an additional monument on Station Road then do that, but leave the wheel where it is." - "It's a forgotten area people walk along if they live in that area, to put the wheel there will leave it open be destroyed." - "Totally ridiculous and unnecessary idea. Leave well alone, it's a great reminder and feature in the centre of town and another feature could be easily sorted for the fountain area." - "It's being dumped out of the way on a piece of land that Sainsbury's didn't want." - "I've listened to all sides and still firmly believe it shouldn't be moved. I feel it will go unseen and unnoticed and is a huge waste of money." - "Put the vote to the people! I would vote to leave it where it is in the Town Centre where it's seen by all and not in an out of the way area. How many people actually walk down station road?" - "Should be left outside the town hall not moved to some random corner of the town." - "It should be left where it is for all to see not hidden away, it's what Biddulph's all about." - "I personally think the council have sadly got the feeling of Biddulph people wrong on this one and the wheel should stay where it is." - "Why would they want to do this? What is wrong with it's present location?Biddulph was a town built on coal."
The council explained back in February that once it was satisfied with the memorial plans it would consult with a range of residents and organisations in the town to try and ensure that people were happy with how the gardens and memorial would look.
